Abstract
Mental health care is undergoing rapid transformation with the integration of digital technologies. Digital psychiatry, encompassing telepsychiatry, mobile health applications, artificial intelligence, and virtual therapy platforms, has become increasingly relevant in mental health nursing practice. This review examines current trends, benefits, and challenges associated with digital psychiatry in mental health nursing.
Keywords: mental health; mobile health applications; nursing practice
Introduction
Mental health disorders contribute significantly to the global burden of disease. Digital psychiatry has emerged as a promising solution to overcome barriers such as stigma and limited access. Mental health disorders are among the leading causes of disability worldwide, contributing significantly to the global burden of disease. Conditions such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and substance use disorders affect millions of individuals, impairing their quality of life and productivity. Despite the growing need for mental health services, access to care remains limited due to stigma, shortage of trained professionals, financial constraints, and geographical barriers. These challenges highlight the urgent need for innovative approaches to mental health care delivery.
In recent years, rapid advancements in digital technology have transformed various aspects of healthcare, including mental health services. Digital psychiatry has emerged as a dynamic field that integrates technology with psychiatric care to improve accessibility, efficiency, and patient outcomes. It encompasses a wide range of tools such as teleconsultations, mobile health applications, wearable devices, and artificial intelligence-driven platforms. These innovations enable continuous monitoring, early detection of symptoms, and timely interventions, thereby enhancing the overall quality of care.
Mental health nursing plays a critical role in delivering holistic and patient-centred care. Nurses are often the first point of contact for individuals experiencing mental health issues and are instrumental in assessment, therapeutic communication, and ongoing management. With the integration of digital tools, mental health nurses are now able to extend their care beyond traditional clinical settings. They can provide remote support, monitor patient progress in real-time, and engage patients through interactive and personalized interventions.

Conclusion
Digital psychiatry enhances care but requires proper training and ethical frameworks. Digital psychiatry has emerged as a transformative approach in the field of mental health nursing, offering innovative solutions to longstanding challenges in mental health care delivery. The integration of technologies such as telepsychiatry, mobile applications, and artificial intelligence has significantly improved access to care, particularly for individuals in remote and underserved areas. These advancements have enabled timely interventions, enhanced patient engagement, and promoted continuity of care, which are essential components of effective mental health management.
At the same time, the successful implementation of digital psychiatry depends on the preparedness and adaptability of mental health nurses. As frontline healthcare providers, nurses play a vital role in facilitating the use of digital tools, educating patients, and ensuring that care remains patient-centered and ethically sound. Developing digital competencies and incorporating technology into routine nursing practice are now essential skills in modern mental health care.
